American Savings Bank (ASB) Hawaii LogoAmerican Savings Bank (ASB) Hawaii comes in as the third largest bank in the whole state, with total assets reaching a massive $6.7 billion.

ASB dates its origin back to the incorporation of a company in the state of Utah for one Mutual Savings and Loan in 1922. Fast forward one year, and we see the incorporation of another company named American Building and Loan Company (ABLC).

ABLC was granted permission to establish its first branch in Hawaii two years later in 1925. With both companies growing rapidly over the next seven years, the two organisations agreed to a merger, becoming American Mutual Savings and Loan. Another 10 years go by, and they decide to change the name again, this time to American Savings and Loan Association.

We won’t go into further detail, but over the next 40 years, the bank continued to grow through the acquisition of competitors assets and branches around the islands of the state.

1987 saw a separate subsidiary formed to conduct of all the operations in Hawaii. You guessed it, they called it the American Savings Bank.

Exactly 10 years later, ASB undertook its biggest acquisition yet. This time taking over Bank of America’s Hawaii Division, bringing their total branches in the state to 68, with assets totalling a huge $5.5 billion.

As of 2014, branches have declined slightly to 55 across the five islands, with assets contrastingly increasing slightly to $6.7 billion.

ASB in 2016 focuses on opening their doors to everyone in Hawaii. Stating no matter who you are, you’re welcome to visit one of their friendly branches.
